Lockout tagout systems are essential in providing an additional layer of security for electrical engineers when working on live installations, as they disengage or de-energise energy sources from the machinery or conductors being worked on. Essentially, the equipment is shut down until the repair work is completed.
If correct lockout tagout procedures are not followed, then engineers may face serious injury if exposed to such hazardous energy. This energy can be from pressure, gas or electrical sources, amongst others.
While lockout devices are themselves placed on installations to prevent the accidental expulsion of energy, tagout means the application of a warning tag to stop that piece of equipment from being started up at all (while being worked on).
