A bright red LED within the white nylon tip combines with an audible sounder and vibration alert to indicate detected voltage. Low voltage mode covers 12 V to 1000 V AC, using a flashing red LED, beeping sounder and vibration, with the response rates increasing as the detector moves closer to the voltage source. Medium voltage mode covers 100 V to 1000 V AC, using a steady red LED, rapid beeping and constant vibration. A built-in bright-white LED torch and tip-mounted work light assist in poor light, while automatic power-off after approximately five minutes of inactivity helps conserve battery power.

Specification Notes
- The VF5 indicates live AC circuits only. It cannot determine the actual voltage and must not be used to verify that a circuit is de-energised. It is not a Safety Test Lamp
- The detector is unable to detect voltage on armoured or sheathed cable, cable in conduit, cable behind panels or cable within metallic enclosures
- Insulation type and thickness, distance from the voltage source, shielded wires and other factors may affect reliable operation and the point at which the detector changes from low to medium voltage mode
